India has opened a BRICS Development Bank satellite office in Mumbai, focused on funding infrastructure in South Asia.

Egypt and South Africa have jointly proposed a BRICS cultural and educational exchange system—further integrating soft power into the bloc’s DNA.

In each case, the message is the same: we can trade, invest, and develop—without Washington’s approval or the dollar’s leash.

While unity within BRICS is far from perfect—India and China remain wary rivals—the overarching consensus is clear: dependency on Western institutions is no longer strategic.

The Post-Dollar Horizon

The most radical shift came at the close of the 2024 BRICS+ summit, where member nations announced plans to explore a new reserve basket—tentatively called the “BRICoin Unit.” Not a digital currency, but a composite benchmark, it would blend national currencies, commodities (like oil and gold), and potentially digital assets for inter-BRICS trade settlement.

Although still in the early planning stages, its symbolic power is immense. For decades, the U.S. dollar has functioned as the default unit of trade, not just because of America’s strength—but because there was no credible alternative. BRICoin, however incomplete or experimental, is a statement of intent: the Global South will no longer wait for permission to evolve.

And while Washington downplays the significance—calling BRICS a “loose club of incompatible interests”—markets are watching. Even the World Bank recently acknowledged in a February 2025 report that “monetary diversification is accelerating at the systemic level, driven by geopolitical fragmentation.”

Trump’s White House, meanwhile, continues to frame BRICS+ as a threat to “American greatness”—missing the nuance that the bloc’s rise isn’t fueled by hostility, but by neglect.

The Global South didn’t turn its back on the dollar. It simply stopped being able to count on it.
